Never Expected, Always Appreciated; Tips

Did you know in the early 1900's TIPS stood for To Ensure Proper Service?! And was awarded to service providers at the beginning of a service! My how things evolve!

We still here the age old question at hair salons: “What do I tip?” Tipping is a gesture of appreciation that recognizes not only the skill of our hairstylists, but also their dedication to their guests on holidays, late nights, weekends and more! In this article, we will explore the long-standing tradition of not tipping salon owners (thanks Oprah), the standard 20% tipping rate, and why we even tip our hairdresser. So, let's dive into the world of the salon etiquette of tipping.

Within the hair salon industry, it has been a long-standing tradition to refrain from tipping the salon owner. This custom is rooted in the understanding that salon owners have already built their businesses and benefit from their success. Oprah also exacerbated this tradition by mentioning it on an episode of her show. She has since evolved with times and corrected this old habit, you can view her article on who and how to tip HERE . I was believed the owner reaps the benefits of owning the salon thus a tip shouldn’t be thought of. Now in modern times we all know, owning the business isn’t always reaping the benefit! Many salon owners go years without paying themselves to keep their business running or updated, due to the high overhead of costs in the beauty industry. Salon owners are stylists too! This is also true for independent stylists, since they are the owner, the staff, the back of the house and more!

When it comes to tipping your hairdresser, it is generally accepted that a standard tipping rate of 20% is appropriate; or $10-$12 an hour if you want to break it down that way. Tipping at this level demonstrates your appreciation for the hard work and skill that goes into creating your desired hairstyle. It also goes directly to your service provider who may work on a commission bases or rent their station and pay utilities out of pocket as well. Never be afraid to discuss beauty budget at any salon, money is not an off limits topic when you're deciding to spend your hard earned money anywhere. If you don’t feel safe discussing your investment maybe thats not the space for you. Consultations are usually free and only 15 minutes to discuss any of your needs, inspo pics, price, and more so there are no surprises at check out.

Tipping goes beyond the monetary aspect; it is a great way to show your hairdresser that you value their efforts, their education/expertise. Hairstylists undergo extensive training and continuously strive to improve their techniques and stay updated with industry trends. Your gratuity acts as a catalyst for their professional growth and encourages them to go the extra mile in serving their clients.

We always like to say Tipping is appreciated, ever expected.” But we often get asked these questions of etiquette because folks really want to know! Don’t forget, salon service providers rarely get PTO, they work weekends and holidays, and often come early and stay late because they love their guests. Tipping is a great way to support your stylist and their creative schedules. Let's continue to appreciate the artistry and dedication that hairstylists bring to their craft by generously tipping and acknowledging their exceptional skills.

We know it can be an awkward conversation, but it doesn't have to be! Hopefully this helps open the door to safe spaces and clear discussions.
